Week 7 Journal Entry #1: Challenging Nursing Assistant Skill – Handwashing

Challenging Nursing assistant skill handwashing

Journal Topic and Instruction

Our nursing assistant class instructor wants us to journalize our thoughts about our experience in learning and performing the skills. It’s a struggle to learn all the skills in the nursing assistant course for a short term.

Here’s my teacher’s instruction. . .

Think about, then write about any of the following questions, or choose your own comments related to the nursing assistant skills you learned in this course.

What was the most challenging thing for you about learning these skills?
Was there one skill that was easier or more difficult to learn than the others?
Why do think that was? What skill(s) have you enjoyed the most?
Was there anything unexpected about the skills you have learned?

Journal Entry: Nursing Assistant Skill – Handwashing

Here’s my thoughts. Read my journal entry below. . .

When the clinical / lab was coming up, I was wondering if I would be able to commit to memory the steps needed to perform each nursing assistant skill to take care of the needs of the patients.

I couldn’t believe that washing my hands before and after performing the skill is what I struggled with the most. This is very important because I have to protect myself from infection. It’s one of the Standard Precautions that a nursing assistant should learn. I always forgot to wash my hands after doing the skill.

In my everyday life I always wash my hands. I am very obsessed when it comes to hand washing. My husband called me a “germ freak”.

There was a time when I washed my hands so often that my hands became so dry and itchy that I ended up having a sensitivity to soap.
