Week 5 Journal Entry #2: Pain Management – Comfort and Rest

Journal Topic and Instruction

The topic that we are going to write in our journal is about “Pain, Comfort and Rest”.

Here’s our nursing assistant online class teacher’s instruction. . .

Think about, then write about the following, or choose your own comments on the topic of pain, comfort, or rest.

Example: Mrs P., a patient, had crippling rheumatoid arthritis. She has many good days when she manages her own care and gets around well, but this week, she is having a severe flare up of her illness.

What are some measures you may be asked to do to help Mrs P. be more comfortable.

Journal Entry: Managing Pain with Medication

Here’s my journal entry. . .

Last year while I was in the process of getting enrolled in a Nursing Assistant class, my daughter had a tooth extraction.

While I was attending a one-day enrollment event in my local community college, she went to an oral surgeon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She had 4 wisdom teeth pulled.

I was at the school for a long time. She got home earlier than I.

When I got home, I was so shocked to see her. She looked so awful. She said that she was in terrible pain.

She tried to help herself earlier by putting ice cubes in a small plastic bag and wrapped it with a small towel. I grabbed an ice cap and filled it with some ice cubes to replace what she was using.

She said that the doctor had a prescription for her pain. We didn’t have any pain pills at home. The prescription said that she could take Ibuprofen 600 mg.

So I went to the pharmacy and got Ibuprofen for her to take. Just a few minutes after she took the Ibuprofen, I could see the difference in her face, she looked so much better as if she had not been in pain.
